An elite task force formed for one mission: to spread the word on how to treat the animals of our community.
You never know where the team members will pop up. They may be out on the streets checking in one their animal brethren or taking part in a classroom presentation to teach kids about the importance of animal care, spaying and neutering, staying safe from animal bites, or preventing neglect and abuse.
But be sure, wherever you spot the Humane Team, they'll be helping to spread the word about why all animals -- companion or wild -- deserve kindness, empathy, respect & responsibility. Don't worry, the message may be serious but these guys like to have fun too.
Meet Harry the Humane
Harry is the leader of Ohio Kids Love Animals' Humane Team. He is a sweet, adorable yellow Labrador mix. His story is all too common. His former owners did not spay Harry's mom, and she had a litter of eight little puppies. These puppies were cute as can be and like most Labradors were loving, affectionate, and most of all energetic. Unfortunately, Harry's owners didn't realize that dogs and puppies take a lot of work. They were unable to give Harry and his siblings the proper care that they needed, so the puppies were brought to CAHS, where they were all put in the adoption program. With the help of CAHS matchmaking volunteers, Harry found a wonderful, loving new family.
Meet Annabelle
This little tuxedo cat has a lot of spunk. Like many cats, Annabelle loves playing with string, sleeping and
playing with her friends. Annabelle had a very rough start to life. Like the rest of the one million homeless
cats in Central Ohio, Annabelle didn't have food, shelter or a family to call her own. A Good Samaritan found
her in her yard one day, skinny and matted fur. The Good Samaritan took her home so she could fatten her up,
comb her fur and try to find her a new forever family. However, it didn't take long for the Good Samaritan
to realize just how great Annabelle was that Annabelle was already home. Annabelle is now one spoiled little
princess; as she should be.
Meet Jax
Jax was given to a little child as an Easter gift. What youngster wouldn't love receiving a cute bunny as a
present? After Easter, the child lost interest in Jax and nobody in the household wanted to take the time
to care for him. The family thought he would have more fun if they set him free. Unfortunately, as a
domestic rabbit, little Jax didn't know how to survive outdoors. Jax needed people to look after him.
Luckily some neighborhood children saw him alone and scared and told an adult, who happened to volunteer
with a local animal rescue. One look at Jax and she knew he needed some tender loving care. Jax is now a
full-fledged member of her family, which consists of her and her husband, two cats and a dog.
Meet Rocky
Looking at this mischievous ferret, you would never guess that someone did not care about Rocky. Rocky came
from a home where his owners were excited the day they got him, but then lost interest very quickly.
Eventually, his owners forgot to pay attention and feed him, forgot to clean his cage, and even forgot to
take him with them when they moved. Rocky was on the verge of starvation when CAHS Humane Agents received
an anonymous call and went to check out the situation. Humane Agents rescued Rocky, and brought him to the
shelter, where he was given a nice clean house and more food than any ferret could ever want. It didn't
take long for this playful ferret to catch the eye of a new mom; one who had previous experience with
ferrets and knew how to care for Rocky.
Meet Lizzie
Lizzie's former owners bought her as a teeny lizard at an exotic pet store. Not knowing much about
iguanas, her owners took care of her, making sure she had good food and proper environment. Unfortunately,
Lizzie's owners had not done their homework. Each day, Lizzie seemed to get bigger and bigger until one
day she was 3 feet long. Not anticipating such a large pet, her owners brought her to CAHS, in hopes of
getting her into a home that was prepared for her. Shelter staff worked with local sanctuaries to find
this quiet yet precocious iguana a permanent place to call home.
